Mild or carbon steel has numerous applications for vacuum chambers. Because the material is less expensive than stainless steel and aluminum, this is a cost effective solution for many uses. Often the outside of the chamber is painted and the inside is either left unpainted or coated with a low outgassing material such as glyptal.
