GNB Corporation celebrates Ethiopia’s historic feat in satellite technology

Last December, Ethiopia proudly welcomed a new day in its technological advancement.

The country successfully launched its first observatory satellite into space, immediately enabling the nation to monitor data crucial to agriculture, climate, mining and environmental protections. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed basked in the success of the historic breakthrough and declared that Ethiopia can now “seek knowledge and information from space.”

I had the distinct honor of meeting with one of the nation’s leaders, His Excellency, Mr. Jemal Beker, the head of the Ethiopian Ministry of Innovation and Technology.

Highlights of this wide-ranging and consequential discussion were captured by the Fana Broadcasting Corporation in Ethiopia and broadcast on national news channels.

Ethiopia’s first satellite is being used for observations – monitoring weather patterns, viewing crops, etc. Ethiopia is a highly agricultural community and this ability is exciting for them. In the future, the country plans to launch communication satellites.
